Traditional Weaving PRODUCTS

‘Traditional’ is a fundamental stance that is absolutely essential when building a stronger,
deeper relationship with someone who is special to you. ‘Etiquette’ where self-expression is
accompanied by the effort to appreciate the esthetic sense of the other person.
‘Good manners’ that have been refined over the years.
And ‘tailoring that seeks simple yet powerful beauty,’ the wellspring of a diversity of styles.
KUNISHIMA aims to create textiles that endorse those three ideals. To be more specific,
we seek to provide attire with a fit that does not constrain the wearer but drapes beautifully,
based on refined color patterns that are not gaudy.
Basically, we create thickly-textured, high-density fabrics,
using techniques that have been handed down over the past 170 years.

Our unique technical
capabilities meld two
distinctive characteristics

The KUNISHIMA 1850 is characterized by pliability and elasticity.
The technical capabilities that have been handed down within our company are what make it possible
to meld these two opposing characteristics. Thick fabric with a high thread count is inherently difficult to weave,
since the warp threads chafe against each other during the manufacturing process, leading to broken threads
and lower productivity. Here at KUNISHIMA, we research the characteristics of each yarn.
We prevent thread breakage via our unique retwisting technique and repeated minute adjustments to the tension.
We have also made it possible to produce a stable supply of textiles
by installing an automatic fabric inspection system, one of only a few in the world.
Such ingenious techniques in the raw material stage and the production process help us
to combine opposing characteristics and create beautiful silhouettes.

Reassurance and Reliability

Fabrics created with the concept of an esthetic
that makes people turn around for
another look after walking three meters past you.
The window pane, striped and trad patterns are finished in beautiful colors.
The orthodox style means that the people around you will get
an impression of reassurance and reliability from just one glance.
Plain fabrics with a matte finish are also available.
We recommend a plain fabric with a sheen
when you want a more dressy style of suit.

is said to signify harmony, cooperation, courage, glory and deep wisdom. Our choice of navy
represents our attitude of sincere engagement in clothmaking. KUNISHIMA NAVY is distinguished
by its use of a deep blue that is the shade of navy most suited to Japanese skin tones,
a restrained sheen, and a coloration and texture that give an impression of depth.

staff voice Aiming to ‘Give physical
form to innate
KUNISHIMA qualities.’

“We aim to create fabrics that
enhance our customers’ lives.”

Just what is fabric that only KUNISHIMA can make? We can proudly say
that we found the answer to that question in our iconic brand, The KUNISHIMA 1850.
Our forte is fabric with the elasticity that comes from high-density specifications,
and that beautifully maintains the silhouette of the suit. We have developed color patterns
by focusing on the ‘distance theory,’ namely the distance that the wearer prefers
in their communication with the people around them. We are a textile manufacturer
and our work reflects our belief that ‘good fabrics enhance people’s lives.’

J.SHEPHERDS

The First Tweed
Produced Entirely in Japan

J.SHEPHERDS. The first tweed produced entirely in Japan, using only wool that was grown in Japan
and carrying out the entire manufacturing process within Japan. Japanese wool is glossy
and has excellent elasticity. We take great care to preserve the intrinsic texture of Japanese wool
when we make the fabrics. That is why we avoid the use of chemicals in each of the processes,
and conscientiously perform tasks manually. In addition, the special weave developed exclusively
for J.SHEPHERDS gives it volume and elasticity. This new KUNISHIMA brand showcases the excellence
of Japanese wool, which up until now has not been in wide circulation.

Mystical Dawn Hues

Shepherds wake up early. From half an hour before the sun rises,
they gaze out across the landscape along with their grazing sheep.
The blue-gray air wreathed in mist,
and the pale pink of the dawn that pierces through the sky to the east.
This fabric encapsulates the wonders of nature and their immense diversity,
as it captures the rich depths of the sky,
which displays a completely different look every day of the year.

The Hues of the Majestic
Natural World

Green pastures and blue skies stretch out as far as the eye can see.
Time stands still upon those hills, and it is only with difficulty
that the occasional pleasant breezes and high-pitched baas
of the sheep bring the shepherds back to the everyday world.
This fabric is an expression of such scenes, and seems to be interwoven
with values that remain unchanged through the ages, and with endless dreams.

Soothing Sunset Hues

The dark blue sky following the blaze of sunset eventually melts
into the distant mountain landscape. The sheep walk slowly as
they have not yet eaten their fill, but the shepherds hurry the flock along,
heading towards the warm supper that awaits them at home.
This tweed is interwoven with the warmth
and aspirations that exist amidst the dark of night.

COBO

Connecting Bishu
with the World

The theme of this fabric is ‘introducing distinctive Japanese textiles to the world.’
The name COBO is an acronym for Chugai Original Bishu Oriented,
signifying original KUNISHIMA textiles that emphasize distinctive Bishu qualities.
The keynote color is black, and the COBO range is characterized by a wealth of texture created
in the post-processing. High density is a basic feature of KUNISHIMA fabrics,
giving them a robustness that means they can stand up to various kinds of processing.
We express distinctive Bishu qualities by incorporating such processes as
our existing washing method of rubbing vigorously in water from the Kiso River,
and the traditional Nagoya technique of Arimatsu Narumi tie-dyeing.
